E-Pub is an ideal alternative to PDF. As well as many times more advanced and modern features than PDF.

Software developer Adobe created the Portable Document Format (PDF) in 1993. Its main purpose was to exchange document files without any changes. Suppose you send a Microsoft Word document in a very nice format. But if your friend's computer does not have that font and the same version of Microsoft Office, then the file on his computer can be very messy and awkward. Or sometimes the box will appear instead of writing. PDF solves this problem. This allows a file to be exchanged in an unaltered manner.

ই-পাব হলো পিডিএফ এর একটি আদর্শ বিকল্প । পাশাপাশি পিডিএফ এর চেয়ে অনেক গুনে উন্নত ও আধুনিক ফিচার সম্বলিত । 

সফটওয়্যার নির্মাতা প্রতিষ্ঠান অ্যাডোবি ১৯৯৩ সালে পোর্টেবল ডকুমেন্ট ফরম্যাট তথা পিডিএফ সৃষ্টি করে। এর মূল উদ্দেশ্য ছিল কোন পরিবর্তন ছাড়া ডকুমেন্ট ফাইল আদান-প্রদান করা। ধরুন, আপনি খুব সুন্দর ভাবে ফরম্যাটিং করে একটি মাইক্রোসফট ওয়ার্ড ডকুমেন্ট পাঠালেন। কিন্তু আপনার বন্ধুর কম্পিউটারে যদি সেই ফন্ট এবং একই ভার্সনের মাইক্রোসফট অফিস না থাকে, তাহলে তার কম্পিউটারে ফাইলটি অনেক অগোছালো ও বিদঘুটে হয়ে যেতে পারে। কিংবা কখনও কখনও লেখার বদলে বক্স দেখা যাবে। এই সমস্যার সমাধান করে পিডিএফ। এ মাধ্যমে কোন ফাইলকে অবিকৃত ভাবে আদান-প্রদান করা যায়।

তবে পড়ার ক্ষেত্রে পিডিএফে অনেক সীমাবন্ধতা আছে। বিশেষ করে স্ক্যান করা পিডিএফে তা আরও প্রকট। পিডিএফের সবচেয়ে বড় সমস্যা হচ্ছে এর আকার (ফাইল সাইজ) তুলনামূলক বড় হয়। এছাড়াও

• ট্রু পিডিএফ (টাইপ করে বা ওসিআরের মাধ্যমে তৈরি): যেকোনও ধরণের পিডিএফে আপনি ফন্ট, লেখার আকার (ফন্ট সাইজ), লেখার রং, পৃষ্ঠার পটভূমির (ব্যাকগ্রাউন্ড) পরিবর্তন করতে পারবেন না।
• স্ক্যান পিডিএফে: উপরের সমস্যাগুলোর পাশাপাশি বুকমার্ক, হাইলাইট,
  মন্তব্য, শেয়ার, পাঠ্য অনুসন্ধান (টেক্সট সার্চ), “টেক্সট টু স্পিচ” ব্যবহার করতে পারবেন না।

অন্যদিকে ইপাব বা ইলেকট্রনিক পাবলিকেশন হচ্ছে আইডিপিএফের (International Digital Publishing Forum) সৃষ্টি করা ফাইল ফরম্যাট। এই ফরম্যাট তৈরির মূল উদ্দেশ্য হচ্ছে ডিজিটাল প্রকাশনা।

ইপাবের ক্ষেত্রে আপনি ফাইলটাকে নিজের মতো করে দেখার/পড়ার ক্ষেত্রে অবাধ স্বাধীনতা পাবেন। এক্ষেত্রে আপনি:

• ইচ্ছেমতো ফন্ট, লেখার আকার (ফন্ট সাইজ), লেখার রং, পৃষ্ঠার পটভূমির (ব্যাকগ্রাউন্ড) পরিবর্তন করতে পারবেন।
• এছাড়াও বুকমার্ক, হাইলাইট, মন্তব্য, শেয়ার, টেক্সট সার্চ করতে পারবেন।
• “টেক্সট টু স্পিচ” টুল ব্যবহার করতে পারবেন।
• খুব কম আকারের ফাইলে অধিক তথ্য (টেক্সট ও ছবি) রাখতে পারবেন।

সাধারণত যেকোনও অ্যানড্রয়েড ফোন কিংবা উইন্ডোজ কম্পিউটারে কোনও ৩য় পক্ষের অ্যাপ/সফটওয়্যার ব্যবহার না করেই পিডিএফ পড়তে পারবেন। কিন্তু ইপাবের ক্ষেত্রে ৩য় পক্ষের অ্যাপ/সফটওয়্যার প্রয়োজন হয়। (উইন্ডোজ কম্পিউটারে মাইক্রোসফট এজের পুরোনো (লিগ্যাসি) ভার্সন দিয়ে বেশ সুন্দর ভাবে ইপাব পড়া যেত। কিন্তু বর্তমান ব্রাউজারে পড়তে হলে ৩য় পক্ষের (থার্ড পার্টি) এক্সটেনশন প্রয়োজন হয়।
